Beaches
Petra beach
A long stretch of sand and fine shingle right in front of the village, with shallow water, sunbeds and beach bars. Two minutes from your room.

Five minutes by car to the west: softer sand, calm shallow water and a row of beach tavernas. The easiest choice with small children.

Pebbled coves under the hills past Molyvos, with clear deep water and the old thermal baths at the end of the road.

Quieter local coves a short drive away — bring water and shade, and you will often have the place almost to yourself.

What to see
Panagia Glykofilousa
Climb the 114 steps carved into the 40-metre rock in the centre of the village. Go late in the afternoon for the light and the view over the bay.

Six kilometres north: cobbled lanes, a Genoese castle above the harbour and a fishing port lined with tavernas. Best on foot at sunset.

An 18th-century Ottoman-era house in Petra with painted ceilings and murals — a small, easy stop in the middle of the village.

A short walk from the square, with 16th-century frescoes that most visitors never notice.

Eating & drinking
Fish on the waterfront
The tavernas along Petra's seafront serve whatever came in that morning — ask what is fresh rather than reading the menu.

Reef Restaurant, right on the square, serves home-style Lesvian dishes, stuffed vegetables and local cheeses.

Lesvos is the home of ouzo — Plomari is the famous name. Order a bottle with a few small plates and take your time.

The bakeries near the square open early for fresh bread and pastries; the cafés on the beach road serve coffee until late.

Things to do
Petrified forest of Sigri
About an hour and a half west: a UNESCO Global Geopark of fossilised trees, with a modern museum. Make a day of it with Skala Eressos.

Eftalou, Polichnitos and Loutra Gera have natural hot springs — Eftalou is the closest, right on the sea.

Day boats leave Molyvos harbour for swimming stops along the coast. For sunset, drive up to the Molyvos castle or stay on Petra beach.

Old donkey paths link Petra with Petri and Lafionas through the olive groves; the Kalloni saltpans to the south are famous for flamingos in spring.

Practical tips
- Getting here: fly to Mytilene (MJT), then roughly 1 hour 15 minutes by car, or take the ferry from Piraeus. We can help arrange a transfer.
- Renting a car or scooter is worth it for two or three days — the best beaches and villages are spread out along the coast.
- Shops and tavernas often close in the afternoon and reopen around 18:00; dinner in Greece starts late, from 20:30 onwards.
- Bring water shoes for the pebbled coves, and reef-safe sunscreen — the midday sun in July and August is strong.
